ENSOR’S CREATIVE PROCESS: TECHNIQUE, CONCEPT, IMAGE

In recent years, research on material and technical aspects of the visual arts and cultural heritage has made significant progress. Thanks to the optimization of existing research tools and the development of new imaging techniques, such as Macro X-Ray Fluorescence scanning , the quality of the research data is richer than ever before. In 2013, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp started the Ensor Research Project bringing together an interdisciplinary team with the goal of investigating the material and technical aspects of the 38 Ensor paintings in the museum’s collection. Supported by a parallel conservation treatment campaign, this project is enhancing the understanding of Ensor’s creative process considerably. Other recent research developments include The Art Institute of Chicago’s conservation of Ensor's extraordinary drawing "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" (1887) presented in a book, exhibition and on line scholarly catalogue.

This symposium will present a mid-term state of the ongoing project, evaluating the present state of technical and scientific findings along with current theoretical, stylistic, iconographical and historical investigations. We welcome papers on Ensor's life and work as well as discussions and research of creative processes in the work of his predecessors and contemporaries, and the presentation of new insights in Ensor’s studio practice obtained by analytical and chemical imaging techniques.

Proposals for papers (maximum 250 words) and a brief C.V. are to be sent before September 15 tonanny.schrijvers@kmska.be. Applicants will receive a reply by September 30.

Canning, Professor, College of New Rochelle, New York, and the Flemish Art Collection – Museums of Fine Arts Antwerp Bruges Ghent.

De jongste jaren heeft het onderzoek van de materiële en technische aspecten van de beeldende kunst en het cultureel erfgoed aanzienlijke vooruitgang geboekt. Door het optimaliseren van bestaande onderzoeksinstrumenten en de ontwikkeling van nieuwe beelvormings-technieken, zoals Macro X-Ray Fluorescence scanning, is de kwaliteit van de onderzoeksdata rijker dan ooit. In 2013 is het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen gestart met het Ensor Research Project. Een interdisciplinair team onderzoekt de materiële en technische aspecten van de 38 Ensor schilderijen in de collectie van het museum. Ondersteund door een conservatiecampagne, heeft dit onderzoeksproject onze kennis van Ensor’s creatieve processen aanzienlijk verbeterd. Recent heeft ook The Art Institute of Chicago’s de conservatie van Ensors buitengewone tekening 'De verzoeking van de Heilige Antonius "(1887), gepresenteerd in een boek, een tentoonstelling en online scholarly catalogue.

Dit symposium zal een tussentijdse stand van zaken presenteren van het lopende onderzoek. De technische en wetenschappelijke bevindingen worden geëvalueerd in samenhang met recent theoretisch, stilistisch, iconografisch en historisch onderzoek.

Voorstellen voor lezingen over het leven van Ensor en zijn werk, evenals het onderzoek van creatieve processen in het werk van zijn voorgangers en tijdgenoten, en de presentatie van nieuwe inzichten in Ensors atelierpraktijk verkregen door analytische en chemische imaging techniques zijn welkom..

Voorstellen voor papers (maximaal 250 woorden) en een korte CV moeten vóór 15 september worden gezonden aan nanny.schrijvers@kmska.be. Kandidaten zullen uiterlijk 30 september een antwoord ontvangen.
