ESNA Winterseminar 2022 over technische kunstgeschiedenis

Atelierpraktijk en technische analyse: anders kijken naar negentiende-eeuwse kunst

In zijn oratie uitgesproken in 2016 gaf Sven Dupré aan dat het creatieve proces van de kunstenaar in al zijn materiële en intellectuele complexiteit moet worden bestudeerd. Daarbij zijn materieel technisch onderzoek met behulp van technieken als infraroodreflectografie, röntgenopnamen etc. uitermate belangrijk. Dergelijk onderzoek wordt al ingezet sinds de negentiende eeuw.

Zowel door de steeds grotere technische mogelijkheden en de nadruk op object based research, zijn materiaal-technische analyses tegenwoordig niet meer weg te denken bij object-onderzoek. De vereiste samenwerking tussen kunsthistorici en technische onderzoekers heeft geleid tot gezamenlijke projecten van musea met bijvoorbeeld de Technische Universiteit Delft, gezamenlijke promoties van kunsthistorici en restauratoren, zoals die van Louis van Tilborgh en Ella Hendriks en tot de nieuwe hoogleraar Technical Art History aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, Erma Hermens.

Het is dus belangrijk op de hoogte te zijn van deze nieuwe ontwikkelingen en de rol die kunsthistorici hierin kunnen nemen. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst gaan we in op vragen als: Welke meerwaarde heeft technische kennis over kunstwerken? Hoe werken restoratoren, chemici en kunsthistorici samen om die kennis te vergaren?

Voor de Studiedag Historisch Interieur en Design kunnen voorstellen ingediend worden voor presentaties van lopend of recent afgerond onderzoek in het domein van de interieur- en designgeschiedenis. De focus ligt op de geschiedenis en praktijk van interieur en design in België/ de Lage Landen, of in relatie tot deze regio. De studiedag wil in eerste instantie een forum bieden en een stimulans betekenen voor diverse vormen van onderzoek gevoerd in en over België en Nederland, en gaat daarom door in het Nederlands, hoewel uitzonderlijk ook Frans en Engels welkom zijn.

Beoogd is onderzoek gevoerd in academische en museumcontext, alsook in de monumentenzorg en erfgoedsector. Ook de presentatie van artistiek ontwerpend onderzoek is welkom, eventueel in een alternatief format. Er wordt gestreefd naar een evenwichtig programma waarin diverse wetenschappelijke disciplines (bv. kunstgeschiedenis, architectuurgeschiedenis, geschiedenis, literatuurstudie, gender studies, enz.), diverse historische periodes, materies, en werkdomeinen aan bod komen, en waarin zowel senior als junior onderzoekers een forum krijgen.

De Studiedag Historisch Interieur en Design 2022 zal plaatsvinden op do. 28 april 2022 in Het Pand in Gent. Presentaties duren max. 20 minuten. Onderzoekers-ontwerpers die een ander format dan een klassieke lezing willen voorstellen, worden gevraagd hun opzet te preciseren.

Stuur vóór 11 nov. per e-mail aan malika.mranialaoui@ugent.be de volgende informatie in 1 bestand (max. 2 pgs.):

• uw naam + e-mailadres
• een werktitel
• een abstract (max. 300 woorden, in het Nederlands)
• een of twee afbeelding(en) met betrekking tot het voorgestelde onderzoek
• een korte bio (max. 200 woorden).

De voorstellen worden beoordeeld door het organiserend en wetenschappelijk comité. U ontvangt voor de Kerstvakantie bericht of uw voorstel aanvaard werd.

Wie zijn/haar lezing wil publiceren, kan deze herwerken tot artikel en voorleggen aan de redactie van het Tijdschrift voor Interieurgeschiedenis en Design (deadline: 15 juni).

Following in the success of the first Art Markets Summer School held in Lyon in June 2019, this unique research, training and networking experience will also take place in 2020.

Participants with an academic or professional interest in the mechanics of the art market will join European and American specialists in art history, economics, sociology, finance,and digital humanities. Together, they will present, share, workshop and discuss theoretical approaches, conceptual frameworks and methodological tools in an amical and relaxed atmosphere.

This immersive experience will inspire and shape new interdisciplinary thinking about the emergence, history and governance of art markets around the world.

The art market is essentially a multidisciplinary object of study. While it is now a significant sector of the global economy, it has long played a seminal role in the circulation and reception of art, and provided the context within which artists created their work. Researchers from disciplines as diverse as economics, finance, law, history, art history or sociology have contributed to a better understanding of the complexity and specificity of this market arena. However, despite the advances made in each of these fields, research on the art market still too often suffers from a compartmentalization by discipline.

The Art Markets thematic school aims to bring together the international community of researchers working on the art market and to offer participants the opportunity to better understand the scientific approaches of other disciplines. Sharing a common knowledge base and concepts is a necessary condition for developing transdisciplinary collaborations. To this end, this training offers an interdisciplinary theoretical approach and familiarizes the participants with methodological tools in line with the most up-to-date analytical methods. The interaction between historical and contemporary analyses from the point of view of economics, finance, and sociology is particularly innovative.

In the era of globalization and digital technology, art markets are undergoing profound changes that are leading to a reconfiguration of the modalities of interaction between actors and intermediaries. Issues related to artistic exchanges, the emergence or decline of markets, financial speculation, the concentration of actors and the role of agents in building the economic and social value of art have accelerated the need to use robust analytical techniques to better understand these issues. It is also worthwhile questioning whether these developments are so new. For instance, the role of various institutions such as auction houses or art fairs benefit from being re-examined in the light of their historical roots in order to understand their function in an increasingly global art market system . At the same time, the analysis of contemporary art markets allows us to shed light with the advantage of hindsight on the practices, mechanisms and strategies put in place since the emergence of markets for visual arts from the 16th century onwards. In addition, quantitative analytical methods, data modelling and visualization have paved the way for important methodological and epistemological explorations.

Uitnodiging voor de voorstelling van het boek "In de kunst gelogeerd: Kunstenaarsherbergen op het Belgische platteland (1840-1914)" door Marie Becuwe (Mens en Cultuur Uitgevers, 2019)

Veel kunstliefhebbers kennen de ‘Auberge Ganne’ in het Franse dorpje Barbizon of het ‘Hotel Spaander’ in het Nederlandse Volendam, maar weinigen weten dat ook België in de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw enkele spraakmakende kunstenaarsherbergen kende. De opkomst van de landschapsschilderkunst en plein air voerde steeds meer schilders naar het ‘ongerepte’ platteland. De beperkte mobiliteit verplichtte hen om enige tijd in een plaatselijke herberg te verblijven.

"In de kunst gelogeerd" voert u mee langs de Belgische plattelandsherbergen die onder kunstenaars vaste adressen werden en uitgroeiden tot artistieke ontmoetingsplaatsen. In logementshuizen als ‘Au Renard’ in Tervuren, ‘Hôtel de la Cloche’ in Genk, ‘Het Pannenhuis’ in Kalmthout, ‘De Keizer’ in Wechelderzande, ‘Le Cygne’ in Knokke en ‘Au Repos des Artistes’ in Anseremme schoven talloze kunstenaars jarenlang aan de tafel aan. Schilders als Théo Van Rysselberghe, Hippolyte Boulenger, Félicien Rops, Anna Boch en Henry Van de Velde, namen er plaats naast schrijvers, dichters, beeldhouwers en fotografen.

In veel gevallen betaalden ze de genereuze herbergiers in schilderijen en vierden ze hun creativiteit bot op de muren, plafonds, vensters, deuren en meubels van de herberg. Onder de gasten werden vriendschappen gesmeed en artistieke inzichten en technieken uitgewisseld die het verzet tegen de academische landschapstraditie aanscherpten.

De kunstenaarsherbergen lagen aan de basis van diverse schildersdorpen en speelden een cruciale rol in de ontwikkeling van de realistische en impressionistische landschapsschilderkunst in België. Toch raakten deze plaatsen in de loop van de 20e eeuw snel vergeten. Met "In de kunst gelogeerd" krijgen de kunstenaarsherbergen, hun uitbaters en hun artistiek cliënteel een postuum eerbetoon en opnieuw een voorname plaats in de Belgische kunstgeschiedenis.

The University of Cambridge and Victoria & Albert Museum invite applications for a funded, 3-year PhD in Art History. The PhD is an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Partnership studentship on the subject of nineteenth-century historicism in the fine and applied arts and architecture. The studentship forms part of the Victoria & Albert Museum Collaborative Doctoral Partnership, funded through the AHRC's Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) scheme: http://www.ahrc-cdp.org.
The award will be held in the Department of History of Art at the University of Cambridge, which is part of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art. The project will be supervised jointly by Professor Caroline van Eck (Department of the History of Art) and Dr Olivia Horsfall Turner (V&A). The student will be expected to spend time in both Cambridge and London, as well as becoming part of the wider cohort of CDP funded students across the UK. The successful candidate will commence a fully-funded PhD in October 2018, working at one of the world's leading universities and at one of the world's leading museums of art and design, both of which have well-established expertise in nineteenth-century art, architecture and decorative arts.

De studiedagen Historisch Interieur en Ontwerp willen een forum bieden en een stimulans betekenen voor het wetenschappelijk onderzoek in België naar de geschiedenis van het interieur en design. Hieronder worden verstaan publieke en private historische interieurs, en diverse vormen van designgeschiedenis, gaande van gebruiksvoorwerpen, objets d’art en industrieel design, over grafische vormgeving, tot textiel- en modegeschiedenis. De klemtoon ligt op België/ de Lage Landen als bijzonder rijk doch nog grotendeels onontgonnen studiegebied, doch niet exclusief. Het gaat vooral om (kunst)historisch onderzoek, maar ook andere onderzoeksdisciplines, incl. meer technische, en interdisciplinaire studies, soms met een grote relevantie voor de erfgoedsector en monumentenzorg, zijn welkom, alsook recent artistiek ontwerpend onderzoek. Sprekers zijn zowel senior als junior onderzoekers.

GRANT: Van Gogh Museum Onderzoeksbeurs

Het Van Gogh Museum kent met de Van Gogh Museum Onderzoeksbeurs € 5.000 toe om een recent afgestudeerde kunsthistoricus onderzoek te laten verrichten naar een onderwerp gerelateerd aan het collectiegebied van het museum, ten behoeve van een publicatie. Voorwaarden zijn dat je in de afgelopen drie jaar bent afgestudeerd op het gebied van 19de-eeuwse, West-Europese kunstgeschiedenis (1830-1914), en dat je met de beurs je scriptie of ander lopend onderzoek omvormt tot een publicatie, bijv. een artikel of essay.

Solliciteren
Schrijf een onderzoeksvoorstel van max. 1.500 woorden. Stuur dat samen met een curriculum vitae inclusief publicatielijst, een exemplaar van je afstudeerscriptie en een referentiebrief naar blok@vangoghmuseum.nl.

De deadline voor aanmelding is 1 april 2018. Een selectiecommissie beoordeelt het voorstel op geschiktheid. De onderzoeksbeurs gaat in op 1 juni 2018. Vóór 1 oktober 2018 laat je het resultaat aan het Van Gogh Museum weten.

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition 'Antwerp à la carte' at Antwerp's MAS, this 2-day international conference examines the various and complex relations between food, the experience of eating, and 19th-century art. Modern phenomena such as industrialization, liberalization of the market, urbanization, rise of the middle class, issues of nationality and gender, leisure time and economic upheaval affected the gastronomic field as well as the depiction of it in the visual arts. This new fascination for food was reflected in the entire panoply of the artistic field, ranging from recipes, food literature, decorative arts and interior design to works of art and art criticism.

CONF: Gothic Modernisms - Rijksmuseum Amsterdam - 29-30 June 2017

Gothic Modernisms is a two-day international conference, taking place on 29 & 30 June, 2017, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, NL. Organized by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Coventry University; the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture, in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; the Ateneum Art Museum / Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki, and Radboud University, Nijmegen.

Gothic Modernisms will focus on the (global) legacies, histories and contested identities of Northern European Gothic/early-modern visual cultures in modernity and, in particular, on identities of modernism, including avant-gardes. It builds on two preceding, related conferences on ‘Primitive Renaissances’ (The National Gallery, London, 2014) and ‘Visions of the North’ (Compton Verney Museum, 2016), which have opened new scholarship on 19th- and early 20th-century responses to Northern Renaissance and early Germanic art. Gothic Modernisms will expand this field of enquiry and its temporal scope. It explores the pivotal, yet still understudied, reception, construction and invention of Northern Gothic art and reception in the period spanning the 1880s to the 1950s, extending interest in Latin and Germanic Gothic to the ‘Nordic’ world. We term these artistic and cultural reinventions ‘gothic modernisms’.

The conference thus aims to develop both a broad perspective in relation to gothic modernisms and a deepening of the issues—methodological, theoretical, aesthetic, archival—pertinent to this subject.

Op dinsdag 7 maart 2017 om 16u00 geeft Stefan Huygebaert in de vergaderzaal van het Instituut voor Rechtsgeschiedenis van de UGent een rechtshistorische causerie met als titel “A Tale of Two Cities: rechtsiconologische vergelijking van de decoraties voor het hof van assisen van Antwerpen (1885-1893) en Brabant (1908-1914). 

Hoewel beide steden slechts vijftig kilometer van elkaar verwijderd liggen, kan het verschil tussen de monumentale schilderingen in de hoven van assisen van Antwerpen en Brabant omzeggens niet groter zijn. Dit verschil gaat zowel op voor de artistieke middens en hun specifieke symbiose van kunst en recht, als voor de gekozen iconografie. De Antwerpse casus speelt zich zo’n tien jaar na de inauguratie van het Antwerpse justitiepaleis af. Eind 1885 neemt rechtbankvoorzitter Théophile Smekens het initiatief om schilders Pieter Van der Ouderaa, Karel Ooms en de gebroeders Juliaan en Albrecht De Vriendt de muren van Antwerpse assisenhof te laten decoreren, bijgestaan door stadsarchivaris Pieter Génard. Twintig jaar later krijgt Jean Delville, na herhaaldelijke oproepen uit de hoek van Edmond Picard, als idealistisch kunstenaar de opdracht voor de decoratie van het hof van assisen van Brabant, een ruimte in het hart van Brusselse Justitiepaleis die in 1944 volledig verloren ging. Op basis van archiefonderzoek, 3D-reconstructies en iconologische analyse tracht deze lezing beide decoratieprogramma’s comparatief te kaderen binnen de laatnegentiende-eeuwse evoluties van het strafrecht en de Belgische kunst.

Het is me een genoegen om jullie te mogen uitnodigen op de publieke verdediging van mijn doctoraal proefschrift getiteld ‘Het verbeelde Morgenland. Jean Portaels en de oriëntalistische praxis in de Belgische schilderkunst (1830-1913)’.

Deze academische sessie zal plaatsvinden op dinsdag 24 mei om 15u30 in Zaal Rector Vermeylen van Het Pand, cultuur- en congrescentrum van de Universiteit Gent, pal in de Gentse binnenstad gelegen (adres: Onderbergen 1, 9000 Gent).
