RONDLEIDING: zomers bezoek aan 'Anna Boch, een impressionistische reis' in Mu.ZEE

De werkgroep XIX trekt deze zomer naar de kust voor een exclusief bezoek aan de Anna Boch tentoonstelling in Mu.ZEE. Tijdens ons bezoek zullen we persoonlijk worden ontvangen en rondgeleid door de curatoren Virginie Devillez en Stefan Huygebaert. 

Deze zomer brengt Mu.ZEE een eerbetoon aan Anna Boch (1848-1936), kunstschilderes en mecenas. Dit 175 jaar na haar geboorte. De tentoonstelling richt zich op Anna Boch als kunstenares en als vrouw aan het einde van de 19e eeuw in België. Ze stond bekend als zeer vooruitstrevend: ze bezat een auto, reisde veel en vaak alleen – niet evident als vrouw in die tijd. Net zoals haar impressionistische tijdsgenoten Berthe Morisot (1841- 1885) in Frankrijk of Mary Cassat (1844-1926) in de Verenigde Staten, wordt ook Anna Boch geboren in een erg welgesteld milieu. Anna’s broer Eugène (1855-1941) zal ook schilder worden in Parijs en hij raakt er bevriend met Vincent van Gogh. Haar neef, advocaat en schrijver Octave Maus (1856-1919), is de grondlegger van de impressionistische kunstenaarsgroepen Les XX en La Libre Esthétique, in Brussel. Haar familie was eigenaar van de Manufacture Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière. Deze impressionistische kunstenares genoot internationale waardering. Ze was een groot muziekliefhebber en kunstverzamelaar: ze verzamelde werk van Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh en Paul Signac – en had een neus voor jong talent. Net zoals bij haar Franse collega-kunstenaars nemen zeelandschappen, de natuur en reizen een belangrijke plaats in in haar oeuvre. Ook de Noordzee als onderwerp verschijnt in haar oeuvre: de Belgische kust en vooral Oostende, de stad van James Ensor, waren haar niet vreemd: James Ensor, van wie ze onder meer een sleutelwerk La Musique russe verwierf, lag haar nauw aan het hart. Voor deze tentoonstelling werden uitzonderlijke bruiklenen toegestaan zoals Paul Signac, La Calanque (KMSKB), Paul Gauguin, Conversation dans les prés Pont-Aven (KMSKB), Vincent van Gogh, Portret van Eugène Boch (Musée d’Orsay, Paris). Na Oostende reist de tentoonstelling door naar het museum van Pont-Aven.

CONF: Beyond ‘The Obstacle Race’: Women’s role in the history of 19th-century art revisited

On the 1st and 2nd of June 2023, the 10th ESNA Conference Beyond ‘The Obstacle Race’: Women’s role in the history of 19th-century art revisited will take place, organized by the European Society for Nineteenth-Century Art (ESNA) in collaboration with the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History. Rephrasing John Donne’s famous poem, ‘No man or woman is an island entire of itself’, the 2023 ESNA conference investigates women’s interrelations within the art world and their impact on art objects and collections. 

In recent years, the interest in women’s various roles within the art world has broadened, resulting in numerous exhibitions and acquisitions. This output has mainly responded to the underrepresentation of women in art history by either isolating them or adding them to pre-existing structures, publications, and institutions, and – most often – by referring to the obstacles they had to overcome. 

Although we realize that for a woman in the nineteenth-century art word, there were indeed many obstacles to overcome, the 2023 ESNA conference will instead focus on the choices and possibilities women did have. In our ongoing quest for an inclusive society, it has become all the more clear that people live in relation to each other and create a world together. Our identities are defined by a manifold of intersecting and evolving features and practices. This conference tackles the diverse ways in which women took up different roles in relation to others in order to understand not only historic and present realities, but also the dynamics of art (history). 

The 2023 ESNA conference thus takes a holistic and systemic approach to women’s roles in art during the nineteenth century. The papers explicitly present women makers, models, critics, dealers, museum professionals, collectors, and other mediators in relation to their historical context and within the broader art world. How did women work together with others, which networks and strategies did they use, run into, or create? Within these two days, we hope to set one more step towards a changed art history, where these female actors take their place as self-evident, interconnected, and permanent fixtures.

In Revelry and Shadow: Carnival in the Art of James Ensor and Léon Spilliaert 

Celebrations of Carnival, extending from the Middle Ages through the present, create spaces of collectivity, play, liberation, and transgression, but also of alienation, grotesquerie, and disguise. While Europeans have celebrated Carnival in some form for centuries, the tradition—and its representation in visual art—has persisted with unusual vigor in Belgium. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, James Ensor (1860-1949) and Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) recorded the figures, masks, parades, costumes, and energies that flooded the streets during Carnival season. This lecture will place these artists in conversation with contemporary literary voices such as Victor Hugo, Charlotte Brontë, and Charles De Coster while exploring how Ensor’s and Spilliaert’s work engages the topsy-turvy world of the Carnival, upending social conventions, flouting hierarchies, and reconfiguring both social and political relationships.

Al werd hij in de pers vaak ‘de kluizenaar van Achterbos’ genoemd,  Jakob Smits had wel degelijk de vinger aan de pols van zijn tijd. Hij zag het landschap veranderen, ook in de ‘afgelegen’ Kempen. Hij maakte zich weleens druk over wat verloren ging, maar begreep ook dat vernieuwing nodig was, en onafwendbaar. Het landschap was veel meer dan een mooi plaatje voor hem. Het landschap stond voor de verbondenheid van de mens met de wereld, voor het leven zelf. En ook de moderniteit kreeg daarin, geleidelijk, een plaats.

Geen betere locatie om Smits' veranderend landschap te ondergaan dan in Tabloo, waar de moderniteit hoogtij viert. Nu het Jakob Smitsmuseum verbouwd wordt, gaat Jakob buiten de muren, resoluut en onvervaard. Kom kijken!
