COUR: The Grotesque in Late Nineteenth-Century European Art

'The Grotesque in Late Nineteenth-Century European Art'
Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
3-8 June 2018

This year’s Van Gogh Museum Visiting Fellow in the History of Nineteenth-Century Art is Frances Connelly, Professor of Art History at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her research focus is modern European art, with a particular interest in the intersection of art history and anthropology. She has published two books on the grotesque: The Grotesque in Western Art and Culture: The Image at Play (2012) and Modern Art and the Grotesque (2003), as well as essays for exhibitions on this topic for the Museo Picasso Málaga and the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt and the Neue Galerie, New York. Other publications focus on the phenomenon of primitivism, including The Sleep of Reason: Primitivism in Modern European Art and Aesthetics, 1725-1907 (1995). Her research has been supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Mellon Foundation.

The seminar will consist of three sessions of three hours each, plus an afternoon excursion to the exhibition Van Gogh and Japan. A public introductory lecture will take place at the Van Gogh Museum on Sunday, 3 June. The seminar meetings will take place at the Van Gogh Museum (Monday and Wednesday from 10 am to 1 pm, and Friday from 1-4 pm.)

The Grotesque in Late Nineteenth-Century European Art
The grotesque plays an outsized role in modern and contemporary art, and finds especially fertile ground in the artistic movements of the late nineteenth century. The monstrous, uncanny, abject, aberrant: all find new expression in the fin-de-siècle. To be sure, the expressive range in this period is striking, easily demonstrated by comparing the hybrid creatures imagined by Redon with those of Böcklin, the distorted bodies of Rodin with those of Beardsley, or the cadaverous crowds of Munch with the satirical masquerades of Ensor. The enthusiastic assimilation of Japanese imagery spurred even bolder experimentation in the realm of the grotesque for many artists, including van Gogh. This seminar will explore the workings of the grotesque in this unsettled and unsettling period and explore why it is a particularly powerful means to grapple with its social upheavals and cultural shifts

All interested are welcome to attend. For more info, please keep an eye out for updates on the website of the Van Gogh Museum. To register, you may contact vantilborgh(at)vangoghmuseum.nl

Molse schilderskolonie 1880-1914 in 't Kristallijn

Jakob Smits, Charles Claessens, Paula Van Rompa-Zenke, Emile Van Damme-Sylva, Frans Van Leemputten, Franz Courtens, Willem Battaille, Edgard Farasyn, Otto Heichert en veel andere academisch gevormde schilders waaronder Ernest Midy.

On behalf of Stijn Bussels (Leiden), Bram Van Oostveldt (Amsterdam), Caroline van Eck (Cambridge), Dominique Marechal (KMSK/Wiertz Museum Brussels) and Peter Carpreau (M Museum Leuven) you are cordially invited to the closing event of the
ERC project Elevated Minds: The Sublime and the Public Arts

Du sublime au ridicule il n'y a qu'un pas
Wiertz Revisited

Lectures by
Stephen Bann
Pascal Griener

Wiertz Museum, Brussels
Sunday 7 January 2018
13.00 - 17.00

In art history Antoine Wiertz (1806-1865) is often considered as a curiosum, as the prototype of the artist as ‘failure’. Contemporaries described his colossal and melodramatic works as an odd and monstrous potpourri lacking focus and escaping all aesthetic categories.

The disparage for his work already begun in 1839 when Wiertz exhibited his gigantic painting Greeks and Trojans fighting over the body of Patroclus at the Paris Salon. Paris critics used his work as an example to show how the sublime was just one step away from the ridicule. Also, Baudelaire described Wiertz as an idiot whose paintings were as large as his stupidity. Until deep in the twentieth century, this criticism would set the tone for the Wiertz study and reception.

The recent, renewed art historical interest for Wiertz shows a new perspective. Especially the inseparable relationship between Wiertz’ art and the Wiertz Museum is central here. In 1851, Wiertz received a state subsidized atelier that he immediately used as his personal museum that was entirely dedicated to his own oeuvre. This museum does not only fit within the cultural policy of the still young Belgian state, but also within the broader perspective of the museum as public institution. Since the creation of museums in the late eighteenth century, they function as instruments of canonization of art, often with a nationalistic perspective. Wiertz is the perfect, but quirky example of this. As the self-proclaimed successor of Rubens and with a museum entirely devoted to his own work, Wiertz canonizes his work and declares it independent from any art criticism. Wiertz, as Bart Verschaffel wrote, uses his museum in a clever way to perform his identity as an artist and to write himself into art history.

Two renowned art historians and specialists in the field of the history of the museum will discuss Antoine Wiertz from this perspective. Pascal Griener will position Wiertz, his oeuvre and his museum within the broader European context of the rise of the artist museum. Stephen Bann will focus on how Wiertz’ unique ideal of artistry is already taking shape during his Roman years. The afternoon ends with a debate about the ‘future’ of the museum as an institution and as an idea.
